Hydrogen Summit in Leipzig – EDL gives lecture on HyKero project

The Leipzig-Halle region wants to boost the hydrogen economy. This was emphasized by reprensetatives from politics, administration, business and science at the ‘Central German Hydrogen Summit – Investments for Sustainable Value Creation’ held in Leipzig on May 27, 2021.

At this event, EDL presented the HyKero project which is deemed a flagship project. The plan is to build the world's first industrial HyKero-PtX plant for the production of renewable synthetic aviation fuel, naphtha and hydrogen.

This project is part of the collaborative project LHyVE - Leipzig Hydrogen Value chain for Europe / Grüner Wasserstoff-Ring für die Region Leipzig. Based on their experience, knowledge and ideas, EDL, Leipziger Gruppe (LVV) and ONTRAS GmbH Leipzig have teamed up to develop a green hydrogen system with generation, transport, storage and distribution up to the end consumer in a regional network. The LHyVE infrastructure network enables efficient sector coupling. The HyKero PtX plant makes the joint project unique in Germany and worldwide.

Central Germany offers best conditions

The Minister Presidents of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt reaffirmed their commitment to create closed-loop value chains in a green hydrogen economy.

"Central Germany offers excellent conditions to advance the future-oriented topic of hydrogen“, said Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of Saxony. "In the future, we will be able to leverage the potential of green hydrogen along the entire value chain. To this end, we must continue to face the challenges of structural change with all our might. In Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt we want to and can make our contribution in different ways – green hydrogen is a very crucial one.”

"In our region, we have excellent opportunities for research, generation, transport, storage and application in order to turn the hydrogen vision into a hydrogen reality“, added Reiner Haseloff, Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt. “We are pressing ahead with a technology that helps us to reduce our carbon footprint. Scientists and energy experts attribute excellent qualities to hydrogen in the transport / logistics, industry, energy and mobility sectors. We share and support this view expressly. That is why we definitely want to be part of the solution here in Central Germany.”

One thing became clear at the summit. Central Germany has the potential to innovatively use hydrogen as energy carrier of the future and offers completely new opportunities for cooperation.
