Green light for large-scale hydrogen projects

EDL’s HyKero Project is among them.

Locations of the 62 selected hydrogen projects

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure selected 62 large-scale hydrogen projects out of 230 submitted project outlines of German companies that shall receive state funding totaling a sum of EUR 8 billion as part of a pan-European hydrogen project, the hydrogen IPCEI (IPCEI = Important Projects of Common European Interest).

EDL’s HyKero project for the production of synthetic green kerosene made it onto the list of German projects as announced on May 28th. The plan is to build the world’s first industrial Power-to-X (PtX) plant on the southern edge of Leipzig. The plant will produce renewable synthetic aviation fuel, naphtha and hydrogen. The first green kerosene could be ready for use in 2026.

EDL’s HyKero PtX Project

With its HyKero project, EDL faces a particular challenge. The aviation industry is a sector of economy whose decarbonization is very difficult. In addition, the goals for reducing all CO2 emissions by 50% worldwide until 2050 are extremely demanding.

Only green feedstock is used to produce sustainable aviation fuel: renewable electrical energy, bio-methane and water. Since by-products are reused within the HyKero plant, a CO2-neutral footprint of the plant is guaranteed.

The advantages of sustainable aviation fuel are obvious: With EDL’s HyKero PtX technology, significant savings in CO2 emissions are achieved in aviation. The aviation fuel meets international standards and is ready for use. The existing tank infrastructure and the existing aircraft fleets can continue to be used.

Deploying the HyKero PtX technology is an excellent alternative to the use of fossil-based fuels and, thus, an essential contribution to decarbonize the transport sector.
